Patient Information A - Z
Are you being admitted to Burwood Hospital or visiting a patient and you do not know what facilities are available to you - to cover those every day things that we take for granted such as car parking, banking facilities and getting your hair cut. The following A - Z patient information includes details about these and much more.
Kia Ora
On admission to your unit you will be greeted by a staff member and receive relevant service information.
In accordance with Canterbury District Health Board policies, no one may bring into the hospital any alcohol, drugs or stimulants, other than prescription drugs where these are part of a patient's current treatment programme.
If you are required to leave the unit please ensure that you speak first with Nursing staff.
Burwood Hospital and the New Zealand Spinal Trust strongly believe that good information is critical to the success of your rehabilitation. To this end, the Trust and the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) have funded a partnership facility, the Allan Bean Centre.
The Allan Bean Centre (ABC) is full of great information and resources for you to make full use of. Rehabilitation is an educational, not medical process. At the ABC you can gain expert knowledge of your condition and begin to 'return to the swim'. The Centre is there to help you achieve a high degree of independent living through a full and meaningful return to your family, work and community.
There are no banking facilities or ATM on site at Burwood Hospital. EFTPOS facilities are available at the Main Cafeteria (no cash out), The Travis Coffee Shop and the shops on Burwood Road.

Safe Handling at Burwood Hospital
When you come into Burwood Hospital as a patient, the staff will encourage you to do as much as you can for yourself, with assistance from them when it is necessary. Encouraging independence is an important part of your recovery/rehabilitation plan.
However, if you are unable to stand with assistance, staff will not be able to lift you manually, as this is very unsafe for both staff and patients. Even if staff have done this for you in the past, this is now no longer hospital policy. Lifting, when it is necessary, will be carried out by mechanical means, i.e. patients hoists. Otherwise you will be assisted with moving using alternative up-to-date methods that are both comfortable for staff and patients.
Before any safe handling method is used, you will have an explanation of the manoeuvre and an opportunity to ask questions. If you are unhappy about the proposed method, it is important to let the staff know, so that alternatives can be explored.
Ultimately, the safety of both staff and patients is our priority.
It is the policy of the Canterbury District Health Board that smoking is not permitted on site which includes buildings and the grounds. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas with clinical approval.
Burwood Hospital is associated with the Christchurch School of Medicine, CPIT and the University of Canterbury. There are students undergoing training in all health disciplines and you may be asked to participate in a teaching session or research projects. This will be fully explained and you will be asked to sign an agreement to participate. You can choose not to participate or withdraw at any time. If you are unsure please discuss with the Nurse in Charge, or your Doctor.
The Burwood Academy of Independent Living based in Allan Bean Centre has an education and research focus across the Burwood campus.
You are advised not to bring any valuables or money beyond your immediate requirements.
For any valuables or large amounts of cash requiring safe keeping please ask the Nurse in Charge to arrange for the item(s) to be placed in safe custody. you will be issued with a receipt.
If you leave hospital without reclaiming your valuables, please telephone the Cashier 03 383 6836 to arrange a time to collect them. Remember of bring your receipt.
