Chris grew up in Devonport, Auckland and attended Takapuna Grammar School. He trained at Princess Mary Lab, Auckland Hospital, where he attained Part II qualifications in Microbiology and Chemical Pathology. From 1973 till 1975 he travelled overseas and upon returning, worked at Diagnostic Lab in Auckland as a staff technologist. He achieved his Part III in Chemical Pathology at this time.
From 1978 till 1980 Chris was Section Head of Biochemistry at Whakatane Hospital. During this time, Chris worked for International Committee of the Red Cross in Thailand, on leave of absence from Whakatane Hospital. The main tests performed for ICRC were malarial smears (thousands!), faecal ova cysts and parasite smears and ZN stains for Tb.
After Whakatane, he returned to Princess Mary Lab and worked there until 1987. During that period, in 1985, he worked with the ICRC again, this time in Pakistan. He ran a field laboratory in Quetta in a surgical and orthopaedic hospital.
Once again, he returned to NZ and took a job at Middlemore Hospital for 12 months as a staff technologist; a further return to PM Lab saw him promoted to Automation Section Head in Biochemistry.
Chris remained there until amalgamation with Auckland Labs in 1992. He was then responsible for the Specimen Reception section, and eventually took over blood gas analyser and glucose meter control. This position grew into what is now known as Point of Care Testing; from 1994 until August 2001, he remained as POCT Specialist for LabPlus, Auckland Hospital.
In October 2001 Chris started work at Canterbury health Laboratories in the newly created position of Point of Care Testing (POCT) Coordinator. In 2005, he took on the additional responsibility of Research Studies Coordinator for CHLabs.
