Tim graduated with a BSc from Oklahoma State University, USA in 1977. He Was Chief Technician in the Department of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong from 1979 - 1995 and during this time achieved his M. Phil. (Physiology). He was a research technician in the Department of Pathology at Christchurch School of Medicine from 1995-1999, and then moved to his current position as a Scientific Officer in Molecular Pathology at CHL. He is a member of the Hong Kong Institute of Science and the Hong Kong Society of Haematology.
