Vickie trained as a Medical Technologist at Northland Base Hospital and established an interest in genetics while employed as a technician at Otago University. She went on to complete a Masters (hons) in genetic mapping of fecundity genes at Otago and Lincoln Universities while working within the forensics unit at the ESR in Christchurch. Vickie subsequently completed a PhD while carrying out research on genes involved in leukaemia and tumour progression at the Christchurch School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and joined Canterbury Health Laboratories in March 2003 to run the Molecular Haematology/Oncology group within Molecular Pathology.
