Myfanwy completed a BSc(Hons) degree in Microbiology at Canterbury University before gaining clinical laboratory experience in Microbiology in Melbourne and Immunology in Southampton, UK. A move into into charity funded cancer research followed where her project involved characterising the cells involved in the B cell tumours causing anti-I cold agglutinin disease. The direction of the group's research changed to the development of a DNA vaccine for patients with follicular lymphoma and following extensive experimentation in mouse lymphoma models, the first human patient in the phase 2 trial of the vaccine, was treated and is responding to the vaccine. Since returning to New Zealand in late 1999 she has again focused on diagnostic Immunology.
