Richard graduated from the Otago Medical School and worked as Resident Medical Officer at Christchurch Hospital. He then undertook specialty training in General and Neonatal Paediatrics in Christchurch, Auckland Children's Hospital (Queen Mary) and Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, before transferring to the neonatal unit at Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne. He obtained his Fellowship of the Australasian College of Physicians in 1982. Richard returned to New Zealand to a locum post at Waikato Hospital doing neonatal paediatrics and oncology, before being appointed general paediatrician to the Nelson-Marlborough District Health Board, where he worked from 1982 to 2001. Richard then decided to pursue further his interests in biochemistry and re-trained in Chemical Pathology at Canterbury Health Laboratories and at the Women's and Children's Hospital in Adelaide, obtaining the Fellowship of the College of Pathologists of Australasia in 2006. He is a member of the Paediatric Society of New Zealand and the Australasian Association of Clinical Biochemists. Particular professional interests are in paediatric clinical and metabolic biochemistry.
