| Nasopharyngeal swab - fine wire or pernasal. This must be inoculated directly onto pre-warmed charcoal agar plate for best recovery of pathogen.
If PCR is required - an additional nasopharyngeal swab NOT in transport medium is required. NB: PCR is a considerably more sensitive and rapid test than culture and should be considered as an alternative.
