The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (BMTU) provides an inpatient service primarily
to those patients with an haematological malignancy. The Unit receives
patients referred from the whole of the South Island.
It is a 15- bed facility including 9 individual isolation rooms with en-suites. These rooms have special air filtration systems, which reduces the risk of infection. Patients who receive intensive treatment regimes are usually nursed in these rooms.
Isolation rooms have a
telephone, TV, DVD, video, radio and CD player and tea making facilities.
The Unit has a Clinical Charge Nurse, 3 Clinical Nurse Specialists and 20 registered nurses. Other members of our multi-disciplinary team come from: Nutritional Services, Pharmacy, Occupational Therapy, Clinical Psychology, Physiotherapy and Social Work Department. They visit the Ward on a regular
basis.
