development of the Department’s nursing staff.
- Providing leadership and guidance in nursing practice to
ensure safe practice.
- Promoting excellence in nursing care.
- Ensuring effective interaction with patients/families and
the multi-disciplinary team.
- Ensuring effective communication and human resources
systems are in place and maintained.
- Establishing the Quality Improvement Programme and
facilitating the accreditation process in accordance with divisional plan.

Kerry Fogarty
Clinical Nurse Educator
Responsibilities include:
- Ensuring new staff are orientated to the Department of
Intensive care.
- Advice on clinical practice issues
- Teaching on the Level 7 ICU papers produced in conjunction
with the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT). The
two papers on offer are Foundations of Critical Care and Integration in
Critical Care Nursing.
- Facilitating nursing staff to meet their educational needs.
- Organising and/or giving in-service sessions, workshops,
study days.
- Ensuring training needs are identified in regards to new
equipment and procedures.
- Validating Biennial and yearly certification, specifically
CPR, IV, Fire.
- Representing the Department of Intensive Care on relevant
Christchurch Hospital committee / groups.
- Liaising with educational institutions regarding both
post-graduate and undergraduate placements.
- Providing a continuing educational link between the
Professional Development Unit of Christchurch Hospital and the Department of
Intensive Care.
- Ongoing review of the standards of practice within the
Department of Intensive Care.
