Welcome to the Department of Intensive Care located at Christchurch Hospital. The ICU team consists of over 100 staff encompasing nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, clinical technicians, dieticians pharmacists, ward clerks, domestic staff, administrative and managerial staff, who all contribute their particular expertise to the care of critically ill patients.
The Service Manager works in partnership with the Nurse Manager and the Clinical Director. Together they are responsible for providing high quality and cost effective services to meet the needs of the patients.
The Department of Intensive Care is staffed by 3 full-time Intensive Care Specialists and 2 Part-time Specialists. There are 12 registrars who cover both the ICU and CICU 24 hours, seven days per week. The Intensive Care Registrars are part of the Hospital Cardiac Arrest team and the Hospital Trauma Team. On average there are 2 cardiac arrests and 2 trauma calls a day.
The nursing staff consists of all registered nurses and includes 6 clinical nurse co-ordinators and a team of full and part time staff nurses. There is also a Nurse Manager available and one full-time Clinical Nurse Educator with the Department of Intensive Care and CICU.
There are 4 full time and 1 part time technical staff working on the Intensive Care Department. They also run a 24 hr On-call service. There is a Charge Technician and also a Technical Educator.
The technical team is responsible for quality assurance checks and general maintenance checks on all ICU equipment. They are responsible for the setting up of specialised treatments.
The Department of Intensive Care has one clerical PA/Secretary who has the responsibility of providing general secretarial services to both the medical and nursing professions. The Intensive Care Department also has a Clinical Support Officer who provides support for the Senior Management Team.

Social Work Team has ICU as their portfolio and have daily contact with the department. The Social Worker provides emotional and practical support for patients and families.
The Physiotherapist aims to maximise the patient’s function by providing assessment and rehabilitation.

The Pharmacist reviews all patient medication, during working hours, and advises and educates patients, caregivers and staff on optimum drug therapy. The pharmacist organises supply of medications for inpatients. Pharmacy stock levels are maintained by a pharmacy technician who is rostered to come to the Department Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Referrals to this service are generated by the Department of Intensive Care as required.
The Quality Facilitator facilitates the effective management and continuing improvement of quality for the service.
