House OfficersFirst Year House Officers (PGY1) are appointed to blocks of runs, which are designed to ensure that the person completes the requirements of full registration with the NZ Medical Council by the end of the year. Once appointed, first years will be asked to indicate their block preference and allocations are made as far as possible in accordance with requests. Other House Officers are not appointed to particular positions. Those selected will be asked to indicate their preference for runs and run allocations will be made to meet the needs of the organisation and, as far as possible, in accordance with the requests of those concerned. There are some exceptions to this arrangement. People wishing to work in the following areas need to make separate application for them: *People selected for these areas may have the opportunity to undertake the appropriate University Diploma course during their run allocation. In general, we do not have "SHO" positions, you are either a house officer or a registrar. House officers can refer to themselves as SHOs once they have completed two years as a house officer. They may also apply for registrar positions at this point in their career. House Officer run allocations are generally of three months’ duration, with the exception of Anaesthesia, Emergency, Paediatrics & Obstetrics and Gynaecology, which are six month allocations. We have a number of relief positions in order to accommodate leave cover and everyone (except PGY1s) is expected to take their turn at relief during the year.
