General Information

The Canterbury District Health Board (DHB) provides acute and arranged secondary and tertiary level surgical and medical services, women’s health services, physical disability/mobility/rehabilitation services and a range of clinical support services. Canterbury DHB also encompasses both rural and Ashburton & Community Health Services which undertake community focused activities in addition to secondary care services.

The majority of RMOs are based at Christchurch Hospital, which is the major acute teaching hospital.  RMOs are also based at Burwood, Christchurch Women's, Hillmorton and Princess Margaret Hospitals.   

We currently employ approximately 350 House Officers and Registrars.   

Canterbury DHB is the main provider of secondary level services to North and Central Canterbury, a population of approximately 400,000.

For some specialist services (including tertiary level services), the population base extends to include the West Coast, the whole South Island and, for spinal injuries, the population from Hamilton south.

Canterbury DHB provides approximately 900 inpatient beds and has a staffing level of approximately 3900 full time equivalents.
